MACTEC GARNERS $1.2 MILLION MoDOT SUBSURFACE UTILITY ENGINEERING CONTRACT

ST. LOUIS, MO, Sept. 30, 2005 -- MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (MACTEC E&C) has been retained by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to provide Subsurface Utility Engineering services for a 12-mile section of Interstate 64 in St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis. Bruce C. Coles, president of MACTEC E&C and chairman & CEO of MACTEC, Inc., the holding company (www.mactec.com) - made the announcement.

The $1.2 million Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) contract, is the largest SUE project ever won by the firm. The fast-tracked project will be completed in November. MoDOT estimates total reconstruction costs at $500 million.

According to Jeff Strickland, public affairs coordinator for MACTEC's St. Louis office, the project involves identifying buried and above ground utilities for MoDOT. MACTEC will be locating more than 100 miles of utilities in the corridor and also creating an inventory of all utility poles and overhead lines.

Interstate 64 is the principal east-west artery between downtown St. Louis, West St. Louis County, and St. Charles County. Much of the interstate was designed over 65 years ago and is currently plagued by short entrance/exit ramps, narrow lanes, deteriorating bridges and deficient shoulders/medians. Average daily traffic now exceeds 157,000 vehicles and congestion is heavy, especially during peak morning and afternoon rush hour.

"It's one of the most complex SUE projects MACTEC has undertaken," said Strickland. "About 20 separate entities have been identified as utility owners, including electricity, natural gas, water and sewer providers; municipalities; and telecom companies. Early excavations have also unearthed old streetcar lines adjacent to the facility."

MACTEC's St. Louis office will spearhead project coordination. The firm's Austin, TX; Orlando, FL; Lincoln, NE; Peoria, IL; and Kennesaw, GA offices are also contributing staff and resources, which will comprise nine surveying and locating crews.

MACTEC, based in Alpharetta, GA, is a $436 million environmental, engineering, construction management, and infrastructure services firm with 3,000 employees in over 100 offices nationwide. The firm has operated in St. Louis since 1975, serving a wide variety of public and private sector clients.
