MACTEC ISSUED $2.8 MILLION IN TASK ORDERS FOR U.S. SOUTHERN COMMAND HEADQUARTERS

ALPHARETTA, GA, March 13, 2009 -- MACTEC has been awarded $2.8 million in task orders to provide quality assurance services (QAS) for the U.S. Southern Command's new $237 million headquarters in Doral, FL. These task orders were issued under MACTEC's construction management support contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District. Allen Kibler, President of MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc., made the announcement.

The United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), located in Miami, is one of 10 Unified Commands in the U.S. Department of Defense. It is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation for Central and South America, the Caribbean (except U.S. commonwealths, territories, and possessions), as well as for the force protection of U.S. military resources at these locations. SOUTHCOM is a joint command comprised of more than 1,300 military and civilian personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and several other federal agencies.

The project will create an entirely new military facility on a 55-acre site. A new four-story SOUTHCOM headquarters building will be part of three major buildings totaling over 630,000 sq. ft. Construction will include all support facilities and infrastructure for this complex to serve as a standalone military command.

The project incorporates unique features like energy efficiency (LEED) and anti-terrorism and force protection (AT/FP) measures including building standoff distances, structural preventive collapse, laminated glass, lighting, vehicle barriers and control gates.

Significant possibilities exist for additional buildings to be constructed once the initial scope of work is complete.

Key services that MACTEC is providing include:

  • Provide daily QA inspection, surveillance (electrical, mechanical, structural, communications, architectural, security, and anti-terrorism/force protection) of construction contractor's quality control program/construction work to verify that materials/workmanship for completed and ongoing projects conform to contract requirements.
  • Evaluate construction contractor's quality control activities (level of inspection, testing procedures/results, etc.).
  • Check compliance with health and safety requirements as established by OSHA, the U.S. Environmental Protection, and U.S .Army Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirement Manual.
  • Perform reviews of contractor submittals and shop drawings
  • Manage project details through the use of USACE Resident Management System (RMS).
  • Perform analysis of the construction contractor's schedule.
