IMAGINATION PASSES 200 MILLION UNIT MILESTONE

LONDON, Sept. 8, 2009 -- Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia chip technologies company, reports that cores from its current silicon IP families, META, ENSIGMA and POWERVR, have shipped in over 200 million system-on-chip (SoC) devices*.

With its technology having shipped in over 175 smartphones and media players Imagination is the leading supplier of graphics for mobile applications. Its graphics and video technologies are also available in over 75 netbook/MID products and dozens of TV, STB and navigation devices. The company's processor and communications technology has been deployed in TV, mobile TV, digital radio and connected audio products with a growing range of design wins in the pipeline.

Through enabling its partners to innovate in emerging markets Imagination has developed a worldwide user base for its technologies which is growing in excess of 50% year on year.

Imagination, which specializes in IP cores for SoC integration, believes its success is indicative of a trend in the industry towards complex SoCs which integrate a wide range of capabilities enabling them to be programmed or configured for use in many functional and geographic markets. Imagination's IP can be used to create comprehensive SoCs for consumer entertainment and communications, or combined with the full range of 3rd party and proprietary IP.

Imagination's technology is used by leading semiconductor companies including, Intel, NEC, Renesas, Samsung and Texas Instruments, and by top consumer electronics brands including Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Dell, Apple and Asus.

Says Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination: "Successful semiconductor companies are continuing to invest in R&D, even while cutting back on capital outlay and killing off older technologies and production methods. They know that new and competitive designs are the key to a successful exit from the recession. No semiconductor company has the luxury of reinventing market-leading solutions that already exist. Imagination's technology is proven and uniquely capable for the core functions in today's application SoC."

Imagination building ecosystems at monthly shows and events

Imagination will be debuting and demonstrating IP cores for mobile phone multimedia, handheld multimedia, home consumer, mobile computing and in-car electronics each month at:

  • International Electronics Forum – Switzerland – Sept 30-October 2 – Geneva Ramada Encore
  • ARM Techcon3 – USA – October 21-23 – Santa Clara Convention Center
  • SEE – UK – October 27-28 – London Earl's Court
  • Embedded Technology – Japan – November 18-20 – Yokohama Pacifico
  • CES 2010 – USA – January 7-10 – Las Vegas Convention Center
  • MWC 2010 – Spain – February 15-18 – Barcelona Fira
  • GDC Mobile/GDC 2010 – USA – March 9-13 – San Francisco Moscone Center

Says Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination: "Our customers include half of the top 20 semis and the best of rising semiconductor companies as well as leading OEMs. With our technologies now so widely deployed we have built strong ecosystems of 3rd party developers. Indeed our graphics ecosystem now has over 12,000 members. Whilst we are pleased with our success, it is the ecosystem of developers creating stunning devices and applications leveraging our technologies of which we are most proud. We are very actively focused on providing them with the tools and opportunities to make the most of Imagination and welcome new ecosystem partners to join us at our shows and events and discover how working with us can help them take advantage of new technologies and markets."

Editor's Notes

*This cumulative number excludes ~10 million units of non-SoC devices shipped before 2001.
